Bubble Parable

This is from my Junior Retreat at King's House. For everyone that was there...you guys are great! We had a blast!!

The love of God is like a bubble. Because of its many unique qualities, it can remind those with special insight of the love that God has for each one of us.

Like a circle, the bubble has no real beginning and no end, except of course, when it bursts, but when we see it, we just see a clear ball that goes round and round. It's just like God's love that is never ending.

The bubble has no special color. Bubbles come in all colors, and so too, God's love is not limited to one color. God loves black people and white people, red people and yellow people.

Bubbles also come in all sizes, tiny ones, medium ones, and even great big ones. God's love comes to people of all sizes, big people like adults and parents and grandparents, little people like children and babies, and medium size people like teenagers and young adults.

The bubble is not troubled by things of this world. It is created, and then spends its few brief moments directed by the wind. And so too, people who really understand something of God's love, do not spend all their time worrying, but instead are simply led by God's spirit.

The bubble is a quiet thing. It does not make noise like a firecracker or a toy pistol. Instead it just floats along, silently bumping into this and that. God's love is often quiet too, coming to us in things like a smile, a handshake, or a hug.

Bubbles bring happiness to people. Have you ever seen a grumpy old person blowing bubbles? Impossible! Because bubbles are a symbol of joy. You almost have to have a smile on your face to blow the very best bubbles! God's love is like that too. It's a thing of joy, causing people to sing and shout, and sometimes even smile in church.

Perhaps the most important thing about the bubble is that you have to put something of yourself into it in order to make it real. A bubble just is not a bubble until you blow into it. Well, it's the same way with God's love. Unless you put yourself into it, God's love is not real. God's love is only real when you do something about it.

One very special thing about bubbles is that they must be shared. You really cannot enjoy bubbles all by yourself. They are not nearly as much fun to play with alone as when you have a friend to run and chase bubbles with you. God's love is like that too. You can't really enjoy it all by yourself. It must be shared with others.

Oh, and just one more thing. Don't be disappointed when the bubbles are gone, because the joy that bubbles bring lasts a very long time. And do not let anyone ever tell you that bubbles are silly and childish, because we all know better than that...don't we?
